The Perfectly Imperfect Dosa for the Perfectly Imperfect Woman
In the bustling world of our daily lives, where responsibilities stack up as high as the dosas (A savoury South Indian pancake), women often find themselves multitasking with grace and a hint of exhaustion. It's a familiar scene in many households: we diligently prepare dosas for our loved ones, spreading the batter with care, flipping them to perfection, and ensuring everyone's plate is full. But what happens when it's finally our turn to sit and savour that crispy delight?
Therein lies a silent struggle, a quiet hunger that often goes unnoticed. After all the effort, after inhaling the tantalizing aroma of dosas wafting through the kitchen, we discover that our own appetite has diminished. The satisfaction of serving our family overshadows our own nourishment. And so, the story goes: we find ourselves back at the stove, crafting second and third dosas for ourselves.
A few years ago, I made a conscious decision to change this narrative. I realized that as women, we often downplay our own needs, prioritizing the happiness of our loved ones above our own hunger. It was time to acknowledge that we too deserve to sit and enjoy a warm dosa served with love. So, I started a simple practice: I would ask my husband or my son to fetch my second dosa. It may seem like a small gesture, but it carries profound meaning. It's a reminder to ourselves and those around us that as women, we deserve to be nurtured too.
In these seemingly ordinary moments, we unearth pockets of kindness. We discover the power of vocalizing our needs and the beauty of receiving care in return. It's a lesson in self-worth and reciprocity, a reminder that our well-being matters just as much as anyone else's.
As women, let's reflect on our own lives and identify these pockets of kindness. Whether it's in the context of a dosa or any other aspect of our daily routine, let's speak up and let our loved ones know that we, too, appreciate the act of nurturing. It's a subtle yet transformative shift in perspective, one that empowers us to embrace our imperfections and celebrate our own needs alongside the needs of others.
In this, we find balance, harmony, and the recognition that we are perfectly imperfect, deserving of love, and nourishment – just like the dosa we make with so much care for our families.
